This is Boracay White Beach, where swash and backwash occur.
Beaches are important part of geography and our life.
Who do not wish to experience cool breeze and soothing sand?
Hence, beaches, the beautiful non-rocky ones, attract many tourists and boost the economy.

What is geography? Geography is the study of our mother Earth. It is about the sand, the trees, the seas etc. But why all the hassles? The picture tells it all. Humans are actually very small and very negligible.

What skyscraper can be more beautiful than such natural scenery...? What other subjects can expose us to daily lives more than Geography? :)

As the world becomes more urbanized and commercialized, will the rich become richer and the poor become even poorer?

A boy is enjoying the scenic view of the lush foliage natural vegetation around him under the evening sunset. But as the world is ever changing at a fast pace, will the trees be always there for him?

Technology advancement and globalization is always taking place. Now that almost every other teenager in Singapore owns a hand phone, who would bother to give a second glance at the lonely red public phone?

For us hikers, Geography is important as we have to "predict the weather"

the older generation that represents the aging pupulation in singapore that are unemployed.
due to reasons like lack of computer knowledge and resistance towards upgrading oneself's knowledge.
hence they look so tired and they are unoccupied in the day when they are supposed to be working.

The presence of both natural and human landmarks in this picture reminds us again that natural and human geography can never be completely apart from each another. They mutually affect each other, just as the mountain has prevented straight passage to the other side of it and people have responded by cutting a road into the side of the mountain to increase access to the area behind the mountain.

It was an eye opener for me to see satays being cooked in the open, many of us would probably deem it unhygienic and wince at the sight of this. This is just one of the many livelihoods of people in thailand, the land of a thousand smiles (:

This picture was taken along the busy streets of Bangkok where two dutiful policemen are controlling the heavy flow of traffic where traffic snarls are very common during peak hours. Traffic congestion is just about another pressing problem the Thai goverenment faces due to the rapid urbanisation in this present era. In addition, the recent coup that took place last year has prompted the military government to pick up necessary measures to ensure the well-being of the citizens.

Lim Joe Han 31/07

well, do these brownies remind u of transform plate boundaries? heh. plus, the lumpy surface depicts landforms such as fold mountains! wow. how xtraordinarily amazing. :D

This is a picture of a Chevrolet car (left) parked beside a Hyundai car (right) in Singapore. This is an example of globalisation- a European car parked beside an Asian car in a carpark in a country that does not produce cars at all.

If global warming is said to be true, then there will be a climate change in the future. We must all start to prevent it, or else we would only get to see 'Dory' & others in fish tanks!!!!

Land scarcity is a problem faced by Singapore. Most of the buildings are mainly built upwards towards the endless sky. The picture shows the unique colour of the early evening sky, HDB flats and trees. These three are so very common. But how often is it do we take some time of our hectic schedule to simply just admire such beauty that is so near us?

The Geography of everyday life

This is a photograph of the Great Wall of China, one of the seven world wonders. This shows how much taller the wall is compared to the humans around and it took several years to build this defensive wall to protect the citizens of ancient China from foreign invaders. However it is ironic that millions of workers were dead in the process of building the wall itself. This reward of massive hardwork generates a significant amount of revenue for the economy of China due to the huge number of tourists who flock to visit this historical site.

These turtles are so cute right? They are fighting for food... what has they got to do with geography? The global population is growing rapidly and within Singapore itself, the working society is very competitive as we have to fight for our rice bowls against other people especially the foreign talents who are gradually dominating our working soctiey. In this world, only the strongest will survive...
This is a scene of the CBD of Singapore... from this photo, we could see the economic development of the tourism sector, tertiary industrialisation and cultuaral development of the small country with only 41 years of history.

The clouds in the open sky.

There are many different types of clouds and this is one of them. This is called the Altocumulus Clouds. The formation of clouds is a part of the hydrogical cycle. When it rains, the clouds condense into water droplets and fall into the reserviors. This is where we get our source of water - an essential part of our life.

Everyone is in an ultimate race against time. We rush to complete our jobs, to save time and even rush just for the sake of rushing. But have we ever stop to thank the machine or rather an amazing invention that enable us to do so. The basic transportation device, for example the motorbike. Have we marvelled at its mechanism and its ability to sqeeze though small lanes, helping to us zip pass other pedestrians and help us to save time? Kudos to who ever created this amazing vehicle. Kudos to the other inventors of the various vehicles. The car, the bus, the train the plane. They all help us keep up with time help us break all physical barriers to fulfill our needs and wants. And thus it is an important factor to be studied in geography.

Have you ever wondered why you can arrive to school on time? it is because of the extensive network of transportation in Singapore. Ever since Singapore started to urbanize, its mode of transport has grew from sampangs and buses to trains and LRTs now. The efficent transport system has also proven to minimize traffic congestion. This picture is taken from Boon Lay Bus Interchange.

An ordinary monkey? You might want to take a good look at it before it is completely exterminated from this planet. Preserved in the zoo, its habitat is probably is the process of destruction as people walk pass to marvel at its amazing features. Its beloved trees probably sawed down to make the furniture you and I sit on or probably are about to throw away. Its forest playground probably cleared for the houses you and I gladly live in or are complaining about becasue of its lack of facilities. Have we ever spared a thought for this monkey we see in front of us? Have we thought of a way to ensure its presence? Do we even bother about it being dead or alive? Have you considered its importance? Well, at least the study of geography reminds us about it.

Urbanisation will inevitably breed pollution.
We pursue to advance our own species with a single-mindedness that leaves little room for the other inhabitants of our small planet.Cometh the hour, we will feel the consequences of our ill-conceived actions when climate change will take its toll on Earth. The clouds of change are already gathering...

In geography, we explore the direction and future of this big, plastic world.

GERALDINE TAN GOW HUAH--->34/07

One nation, one Singapore and many individuals to care for. Just a quater of the stadium and we see thousands of people within the area. This is just a small fraction of Singapore's total population. With limited resources, diminishing every minute, every second as you and I speak. Resources stressed upon by the growing population and developing industries. How will Singapore support this urbanised society that selfishly craves for better living standards? This is where geography comes into play in our lives.

Water – the most essential life-sustaining substance on earth – has no substitute. But, water quality is declining due to climate change, pollution and many other human activities like mining and indiscriminate dumping of garbage.

All of us staying on this earth’s surface must make concrete efforts to protect water quality and this must begin at the sources of pollution – if not, we will see more and more polluted water like the kind you see in the glass in the foreground of this picture, whilst clean water gets more scarce and “distant” from us by the day.

So, let’s all protect clean water, our environment, our earth – and ourselves.

The challenge of compromising concrete & mother nature. This is evidence of rapid urbanisation and its impact on our daily lives.

In years to come, how different will our world be? Will my kids grow up to see what I saw? Will there still be little squirrels and majestic trees?

Shereen Yam, 36/07

This picture was taken in Changi VIllage, and it shows how people can enjoy a mix of both the natural environment and human-made structures. The sunset in the sky, the trees, the sea and the boardwalk is an example of how geography encompasses interaction between man-made and natural landscapes.

Taken from inside a bus, trees, bushes and HDBs are what i see in my everyday life. geography has permeated our lives in many ways. Everything in the photo has linkages to Geography. Oil for bus transport, cement for HDBs, the way trees and bushes grow and it also involves human geography, like the transport system in Singapore and how trees and bushes have made Singapore an iconic Clean And Green City.

Does this remind you of something? This is certainly not an extract from our secondary 4 geography textbook. This is a photo of a stump taken at Singapore's Changi Beach. A stump is developed from a stack which has undegone coastal erosion. Learning of geography is not confined to just books, and this photo had just reminded me of marine erosion which is taking place now.

The interior of a car? Machinery? The mark of globalisation?
Rather, the beauty of a timpani taken from another angle. The view of a timpani from yet another perspective, unlike what is normally seen.

This photo is taken from the second level of bugis st, which i believe many of us would have just past by without noticing the beauty of it. This picture shows many people, esp teenagers, crowded together and doing what they love most--shopping! Shopping is a source of entertainment in Singapore and this building is just an example. [If u look carefully, there is a caucasian in the pic] Even tourists are also attrcted to this building. Such entertainment in Singapore is an attraction for tourists!

A common sight around HDB flats in Singapore, this cleaner is doing us and the earth a big favour by picking out and collecting what he can for recycling.
